CURRICULUM

The comprehensive educational program of MCSCS adheres to the School District of Philadelphia's and the Dept. of Education State standards, supplemented with elements from national organizations, state and federal standards, and other proven programs. The foundation of the Mathematics, Civics and Sciences Charter School of Philadelphia, Inc.'s educational program is a four-part process:

• Well established teaching methods and goals
• Implementing a mastery based learning curriculum
• Developing methods to assess students' progress
• Executing steps for corrective actions

The MCSCS courses and curriculums are structured to cover the mastery of basic concepts attained at grade appropriate levels.   Developmental stages of the skilled learner will move through fairly predictable phases such as beginner, intermediate, proficient.

The curriculums are designed to encompass education and skill based competency utilizing the following concepts:

• Reading, using  Phonics Approach
• Basic Writing
• Basic Math
• Study Skills
• Computer and Science Labs (available for every grade level)
• Theoretical and Practical
• Applications
• Visual Aids and Hands on Experience (Visits to Courts, Hospitals, Computer Consulting Firms)
• Learning Labs
• Team Building
• Leadership Skills

• Electives
  In addition to our rigorous course work, students in fifth through twelfth grades are required to select a school-to-college course of study. The selections include Law, Medical, Computer Science and Accounting Academies. The academies are staffed by professional lawyers, doctors, computer specialists and certified public accountants. The students attend the academies five days a week and they receive full credit for the course. Other required subjects offered are Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Reading and Computer classes for every student

• Faculty
  MCSCS faculty consists of experienced Pennsylvania certified teachers and assistants who as positive role models exhibit respect, love, individual attention and a reward system for success. The teachers are accountable for children's achievement.

After School Tutoring Program
MCSCS students in need of academic support are provided with free after school tutoring.
